This is a basic overview and map of the Camino Dragonte. This detailed Camino Dragonte map shows how to walk one of the most intrepid detours on the Camino Frances pilgrimage route. The Camino Dragonte detour starts from the popular pilgrim village of Villafranca del Bierzo and finishes at the beautiful village of Las Herrerias.
The Ruta Dragonte is a challenging route that traverses the mountainsides, passes through tiny villages, and sees very little foot traffic. This route is recommended for those travelers who are comfortable hiking in the mountains, feel confident hiking with little to no signage, and can follow an offline map. Less than 1% of pilgrims walking the Camino Frances route to Santiago de Compostela add this difficult route.
Here's a brief overview of the Ruta Dragonte from Villafranca del Bierzo to Las Herrerias.
⁉️ If downloading the map, please verify that the map is correct and follows the waypoints. Oftentimes, there are daily updates to the site, map platforms, and other external issues that may cause a bug in downloading. Be mindful that this map is solely for entertainment purposes. See my full disclosure here. Always hike responsibly and respect the mountains by following a no-trace philosophy, avoid hiking alone, be conscious of the weather and personal limitations, and do not stray from the visible trail

Sleeping in Villafranca del Bierzo
It's best to sleep in Villafranca del Bierzo the night before walking the Ruta Dragonte. The Camino Dragonte is an all-day trek and there is really no place to sleep until Las Herrerias. Be mindful that there are a few opportunities to rejoin the original Camino Frances route from the villages.
Villafranca del Bierzo has a Municipal Albergue that works as a first come, first serve basis. The price is €6 for a bed with 60 beds. The Municipal Albergue in Villafranca is open from March until November.
Alternatively, Villafranca del Bierzo is a popular pilgrim village before reaching the Galicia stage of the French Way. Most pilgrims walk from Villafranca del Bierzo to O Cebreiro. Find tons of hostels, hotels, pensions, private albergues, and places to stay in Villafranca del Bierzo.
Tips Before Departing on Ruta Dragonte
As this Camino route is open and exposed in the mountains, do not attempt this alternative trail if the weather is bad. Do not do the Camino Dragonte if there is heavy snow in the mountains, or if there have been recent heavy rains. Always check in at Villafranca del Bierzo before departing to see if the trails are passable.
The Ruta Dragonte is best to hike during the summer months. I completed this route at in the beginning of September.

Camino Dragonte Map Overview
Here's a step-by-step breakdown of this Camino Dragonte Map.
Villafranca del Bierzo to Dragonte
This is a full-day trek so depart Villafrance del Bierzo early. Cross over the Medieval Bridge in Villafranca over the Burbia River. Follow the road past the Hostal El Cruce on the road. There is an official signboard here that indicates the start of the Camino Dragonte. Follow the paved road to the right uphill. The road continues uphill past vineyards until it reaches Dragonte signboard.
The signboard marks the entrances to Dragonte village. Head to the right (Dragonte Barrio de Abajo). The road leads past a water fountain and the Area de Descanso. Stop in the mountain hut to sign in, collect your stamp, and check in on any updated information.
🥾 Villafranca to Dragonte Hut | Distance: 3.75 miles | Duration: 1.5 hours
Dragonte to Moral de Valcarce
Stock up on water and head out of Dragonte village towards Moral de Valcarce. The trail is straightforward and eventually leads to a road that allows access to Moral de Valcarce. Head through the village until you reach a fork in the road. Look for the no longer functioning water fountain. There should be a large dog kennel to the left, too.
Take the left-hand trail out of Moral de Valcarce. This area is not marked, so make sure to follow the Camino Dragonte map or ask the locals. We had to go back and ask twice!
Moral de Valcarce to Villar de Corales
The hiking path continues. Be on the lookout for the old stone mill. Here, you will need to turn to the right just in front of the stone mill. There is a green arrow and writing on the stone mill that reads ➜ Santiago. Ford a small stream to continue on the trail. The stream covers the trail for less than 200 ft or so (at the end of summer).
The trail twists through an incredible chestnut forest. There is a refreshing water fountain before the trail opens up into the turn into Villar de Corales
🥾 Villafranca to Villar de Corales | Distance: 8 Miles | Duration: +/- 4 hours
Villar de Corales to San Fiz de Seo
Villar de Corales seems almost abandoned. Be mindful that there were a few dogs in this area that seemed to be watching the property. We saw more sheep than people in the pueblo.
Continue on the trail. This section is open and there is no forest. There are stunning views of the surrounding valleys and villages.
The trail was quite overgrown with itchy brush and continues until you see the first views of San Fiz de Seo. The hamlet will be on the left with the Quarry to the right. Walk on the road next to the active quarry. Be mindful of large machinery.
San Fiz de Seo to Vilasinde
San Fiz de Seo is another tiny village next to Barjas River. We had planned on enjoying our lunch next to the river but the bugs were terrible. Instead, we opted to head towards the main plaza where there was a shaded bench and a water fountain. The plaza is marked with a small church.
After a break, head up to Vilasinde. This area is also exposed and passes through a large bee-keeping area. The trail continues through another chestnut forest. Look for one of the largest trees marked Castaño del Tio Guillermo.
The trail leads to Vilasinde, a small village known for its small bar, Bar Celia. Stop by and feel the warm welcome of Celia, who runs "one of the best bars on the Camino." She is truly a pure sign of hospitality along the way.
🥾 Villafranca to Vilasinde | Distance: 14.75 Miles | Duration: +/- 7 hours
Vilasinde to Las Herrerias
After Vilasinde, follow the trail out of town with one last big ascent. What goes up, must come down, and soon there will be an extremely steep descent into Las Herrerias. Trekking poles are highly recommended, especially for tired legs.

Sleeping in Las Herrerias
After an almost 18-mile day trek through the mountains, Las Herrerias is a welcoming village. The small village sits picturesquely along the Rio das Lamas.
There are a handful of places to stay in Las Herrerias, but accommodation is limited, so it may be best to book in advance.
Albergue Refugio Las Herrerias (Miriam) takes advantage of the charm of the village with an inviting garden lined with hammocks. The modern albergue is cozy with an open dining room and community room filled with games and more. Albergue Miriam Las Herrerias includes a hearty pilgrim breakfast with the price. Miriam Albergue in Las Herrerias was one of my favorite Camino Frances Abergues.
