All of these places near Olomouc can be explored within a day by car. However, without a car, it’s possible to slow down and take multiple day trips from Olomouc via public transportation.

1 | Visit the Museum of Olomouc Cheese

In the morning, depart Olomouc and head to the quiet village of Loštice. This little village houses the Museum of Olomouc Cheese, or Muzeum Olomouckých tvarůžků A. W. The museum and village is only a 30-minute drive from Olomouc.

Housed in this small yet worthwhile museum, discover all the interesting tidbits and facts about olomoucký sýr, or the “stinky cheese of Olomouc.”

The Museum of Olomouc Cheese is a thoughtfully planned-out museum. All the expositions are in Czech, but upon entrance, it’s possible to receive a handy brochure in English. The pamphlet definitely enhances the experience.

In addition to the brochure, the museum offers WiFi and an informative mobile scan system. It’s super easy to follow along and explore the museum independently.

There are some fun interactive sections that showcase all the hard manual labor that went into the production. Discover all the “cheesy” details of the history of Olomouc Cheese, production, packaging, and the modern-day influence of this signature cheese.

The museum concludes with an entertaining and educational movie about the history of the current factory found in Loštice.

After touring the fun museum, the exit leads to the onsite gift shop. Find every type and variation of this famed Czech cheese you could ever imagine. Although smelly, this cheese is actually very healthy and good for you. It’s completely natural, so it ranks as one of the top-rated cheeses in the world!

I found it delicious, and not that overbearing, but that could be my inner Wisconsin talking.

Is the Olomouc Cheese Museum Worth Visiting?

My dad and I were drawn to this region due to the “stinky cheese” of Olomouc. Since we are Wisconsinites, aka cheese-heads, we went on the ultimate quest to indulge in this culinary delight. So, of course, the Museum of Olomouc Cheese was at the top of our wish list to visit!

We went into the museum with zero expectations and were pleasantly surprised. The Museum of Olomouc Cheese is worth visiting. It’s fun, interactive, and informative. It takes about an hour to tour and we enjoyed the museum.

2 | Eat Authentic Czech Food in Loštice

After touring the Olomouc Cheese Museum, you’re probably all excited about the cheese. While the gift shop has tons of goodies and blocks of cheese to stock up on for later, simply walk across the street to indulge in the stinky cheese of olomoucký sýr prepared with love.

Loštice Restaurace U Coufalů boasts an exquisite menu that features the cuisine of the Olomouc region. Just thinking about the garlic soup with olomoucký sýr transports me back to this relaxing little outdoor patio on a sunny summer morning. The service is fast and efficient.

Loštice Restaurace U Coufalů is the perfect place for a quick, but delicious lunch on a day trip from Olomouc, especially for those with a new infatuation for the regional cheese of Olomoucký Sýr. Like many restaurants in the Czech Republic, there is a connected pension, Penzion u Coufalů.

3 | Tour the Exquisite Bouzov Castle

After lunch, head to the stunning medieval castle of Hrad Bouzov. The Bouzov Castle is a spectacular castle that looks as if it was ripped from the pages of a fairytale. Hrad Bouzov is less than a 15-minute car ride from Loštice.

Not only is the Bouzov Castle beautiful on the exterior, but is not nearly as busy and overcrowded as many of the castles closer to Prague. The distance makes it a little more challenging to visit as a day trip from Prague.

Hrad Bouzov is maybe one of the most iconic castles in the Czech Republic. Believe it or not, this fairytale castle has been featured in various films, making it extremely popular with locals.

The views around the castle are smashing and worth the day trip from Olomouc. The best time to visit the Hrad Bouzov is just before noon to beat the crowds. We visited in the middle of the summer and found the castle to be quiet and enjoyable.

Visiting Hrad Bouzov

To visit the interior of Bouzov Castle, you must join a guided tour. Like many places near Olomouc, there are no tours available in English. However, upon purchasing an entrance ticket to the castle, receive a detailed English pamphlet.

The interior of Bouzov Castle has quite an extensive collection of historically significant items, it’s definitely not just a “white wall castle” with nothing inside. Find many of the rooms of Bouzov Castle furnished and decorated.

Once we arrived at the Great Hall, a musician was playing the guitar. The inner courtyard is beautifully maintained. The overall tour was extremely well done and almost transports you back to the 13th century when the Bouzov Castle was built. We found the interior of Bouzov Castle to be worth visiting.

Practical Information About Bouzov Castle

It’s important to note that the Hrad Bouzov often shuts down for an hour during lunchtime. We arrived right after they reopened.

There are multiple tour options to visit Bouzov Castle. Be mindful that the hours of the castle vary depending on the season.

4 | Visit the Javoříčské Caves

Not far from the Bouzov Castle are the Javoříčské Caves. Found in the village of Javoříčko, these underground caves are found about 15 minutes from the fairytale castle of Bouzov. Parking is in the village, so there is a short uphill hike to reach the cave entrance.

The caves were discovered around 1938 and now can be visited on a guided tour. With numerous labyrinths filled with stalactites and stalagmites, the Javoříčské Caves are the most popular caves to visit in the Czech Republic.

Tips for Visiting the Javoříčské Caves

Remember that the caves are deep beneath the ground, so make sure to pack warm clothes when touring the caves.

There are two tour options, the short tour (40 minutes) and the long tour (60 minutes). There are lots of stairs on this tour, so be mindful of your own physical limitations.

Hours vary depending on season, with the months of May to August being the high season. The caves are closed on Monday year-round.

5 | Unwind at the Pivovar Chomout Microbrewery

The Czech Republic is known for its beer, so there is one more pit stop for those beer enthusiasts. On the outskirts of the city limits of Olomouc, in the small village of Chomoutov, stop at the highly recommended Microbrewery of Pivovar Chomout.

This is not your typical Czech Republic microbrewery. While most people think of Pilsner Urquell as the national drink of the Czech Republic, Pivovar Chomout is taking a different approach.

Pivovar Chomout offers an intimate garden terrace and unique microbrews. This brewery boasts a wide range of beers inspired from American Pale Ales to IPA and milk stouts.

Upon arrival, we noticed some of the brewmasters processing fresh, hot malts right on the terrace.

During the summer months, enjoy a flight of beer on the lovely outdoor terrace. The Inn Chomout (Hostinec Chomout) is located right next door and offers a chance to pair fresh draft beer with traditional Czech dishes or a fun appetizer. The restaurant is also open later than the brewery itself.

Don’t forget about the zero policy laws for drinking and driving in the Czech Republic

Practical Information About Pivovar Chomout Brewery

The Pivovar Chomout Brewery is open only until 14:00 Monday to Friday. Those out exploring the Olomouc region on a full-day trip won’t make it before closing time.

Head next door to the Inn Chomout to sample the microbrewery pours and have dinner.
