Karlovy Vary is best explored by gulping down these healing mineral waters, appreciating the various viewpoints throughout the city, and soaking in the thermal pools. I was curious about all the mineral drinking waters and opted to go on a “mineral water tasting” extravaganza.
The mineral waters are scattered throughout the city in elaborate gazebos and colonnades built over them, so enjoy the elegant architecture of Karlovy Vary whilst gulping down the therapeutic waters.

Notable & Memorable Mineral Springs to Visit in Karlovy Vary
These were some of my favorite water fountains and springs in Karlovy Vary.
Park Colonnade

This makes an ample first stop to sip on some mineral water due to its close proximity to the main bus terminal in Karlovy Vary. For me, this was one of the most bitter and fizzy waters to stomach.
The Park Colonnade also has the popular Snake Spring mineral fountain.
Freedom Spring
The Freedom Spring shoots from the spigot at an extra warm temperature. It takes a good 10 minutes for the curative waters to cool and be drinkable. Surprisingly, once it had cooled, it really wasn’t as pungent as some of the others.
Wait for the water to cool at one of the numerous benches under the gazebo.
Mill Colonnade

There are 5 natural springs to choose from at the Mill Colonnade. The Mill Colonnade is the most centrally located spring and for this reason, it’s one of the busiest. I found the mineral water mild on the tummy and loved the central location.
Market Colonnade (Tržní Kolonáda)
In my opinion, one of the most visually appealing Colonnades in Karlovy Vary is the Market Collanade. At this centerpiece standing colonnade find three natural springs inside, all relatively smooth to drink.
The walk-in Castle Spa is located right up the stairs behind this structure. Catch this lively area at the right time and you might be able to hear musicians playing. Enjoy the music while gulping down some of this smooth mineral water.

Hot Spring Colonnade
The most modern-looking Colonnade in Karlovy Vary is the Hot Spring Colonnade. This spring boasts large picture windows in an interesting glass structure. The water is housed here in interesting glass structures. This building is only open from 9:00-17:00.
Get a Spa Treatment and Soak in Curative Waters in Karlovy Vary
Don’t push it too hard, a day trip to Karlovy Vary is all about relaxing and unwinding.
I could only drink so much, so I took a well-deserved break at Castle Spa (Zámecké Lázně), which I have recently discovered is not accessible to the general public.
However, there are numerous Karlovy Vary spas to experience. One of the most popular Karlovy Vary Spa is the Elisabeth Spa (Alžbětiny Lázně). This spa is open to the public, but it’s best to book a preferred treatment prior to arrival. The Elisabeth Spa also has a pool and salt room.

Another unique spa in Karlovy Vary is the Beer Spa Beerland (Carlsbad). Housed in an old warehouse for beer, this spa boasts royal oak whirlpool soaking tubs with unlimited beer taps next to the tubs.

Savor a Viewpoint in Karlovy Vary

After feeling the most hydrated in years, there’s no excuse to work up a sweat and climb to an epic vista of Karlovy Vary. The hiking trails offer stellar views of the forests, river valley, and colorful city.
Camera Obscura
One of my favorite activities on my day trip to Karlovy Vary was climbing up the steep hill to “Camera Obscura.”
The uphill climb can be a little steep, but it’s a leisurely 20-minute hike or so from the center. The path is not paved, so I would classify it as a hike.
Follow the yellow arrows along the nicely marked paths. There are many viewpoints, but I liked Camera Obscura because of its nice gazebo. If you have more time, the park offers winding paths overlooking Karlovy Vary.
Don’t worry, about going thirsty. There’s plenty of water just waiting to help you rehydrate below.

Peter the Great Lookout
Another lovely viewpoint option in Karlovy Vary is the Peter the Great Lookout. Again, this is a casual 20 – 30 minute hike on a well-trotted path. The lookout consists of a gated observation area on an outcropped rock.
Diana Observation Tower
Diana Observation Tower offers sprawling views of Karlovy Vary. There is a steep 40-minute hike up to the tower, but if you don’t feel like hiking or are short on time, take the funicular up to the Diana Observation Tower.
The cable car has been taking visitors to the top of the hill for over 100 years and is accessible next to the Grandhotel Pupp. The Karlovy Vary funicular takes around 3 minutes to reach the top station and departs every 15 minutes or so.
At the top, find the Diana Observation Tower. Climb up the 150 stairs to be rewarded with stellar views of Karlovy Vary. There is also a restaurant and Butterfly House near the tower.
4 | Eat a Traditional Meal in Karlovy Vary
Karlovy Vary is a popular day trip from Prague, so there are multiple restaurants that offer a fixed lunch menu. Some popular restaurants in Karlovy Vary that serve typical Czech cuisine include Restaurace La Hospoda and Plzeňka Carlsbad or the cozy Goethe’s Beer House.
Hey! Don’t Leave Karlovy Vary Without Trying the Wafers

Save room for Karlovy Vary’s signature treat, the wafers are known as Karlovarské Oplatky. These delicacies have been prepared here since the 1800’s, and capitalize on the distinct spring water and salt.
The scrumptious wafers are also known as “Spa Wafers,” since they were oftentimes served as snacks to those soaking in the spas.
The best advice on how to find the best wafer in Karlovy Vary is to find a little window that is freshly preparing the iconic treat. I opted for the hazelnut flavor. Ahhh, heavenly!
I chose U Jáchyma, positioned oh so invitingly on the river promenade. Warning, they are delicious and this shop offers many different varietals that are boxed and ready to go!
