Spectacular Taste of the Mikulov Wine Trail on a 1 Day Bike Trip
Get a taste of Southern Moravia and its incredible wine region by biking a small section of the Mikulov Wine Trail. The Mikulov Wine Regin boasts charming little villages, wineries, and rolling hills and is decorated with vineyards. This underrated region in the Czech Republic offers a diverse range of UNESCO World Heritage palaces and chateaus.
Mikulov is found in the South Moravian Region and is encircled by the UNESCO Lower Morava Biosphere Reserve. This region is famed for its charming small villages, stunning nature, and delicious wine. As a result, find tons of biking and hiking trails scattered among the vineyards, hillsides, and meadows.
The picturesque village of Mikulov is conveniently close (as in less than 3 miles) to Austria, so this area is almost a unique blend of both countries. The Mikulov Wine Region has a very different feel than other regions in the Czech Republic.
The whole Mikulov Wine Trail is around 50 miles! However, the beauty of the region can be explored in one day. My dad and I explored nearly 27 miles of the Mikulov Wine Trail in one day.
This Mikulov Wine Trail biking itinerary for one day focuses on enjoying the countryside and indulging in Mikulov wine tasting. The route begins from Mikulov and includes stunning sites like the Valtice Chateau and the Lednice Palace. The trail weaves back into Sedlec and loops back into Mikulov through the scenic Pálava Hill countryside.
Here is an aggressive “taste” of the Mikulov Wine Trail via a one-day bicycle itinerary.

Mikulov Wine Trail Bike Map
This Mikulove bike map overviews the aggressive nearly 28-mile adventure my dad and I completed in one day. We biked sections of the Mikulov Wine Trail, visited Valtice, toured the grounds of Lednice, and rode back to Mikulov via Sedlec.
We broke up the long day on the bike with stops at restaurants, vineyards, and chateaus. Of course, we did include some Mikulov wine tastings throughout the day.
The path is mostly flat, which allows for more convenience to explore wineries, chateaus, and the scenic Pálava Hill countryside.

Where to Rent a Bike in Mikulov
First thing first, you’ll need a bike to explore the Mikulov Wine Trail. Renting a bike can be tricky here because English is not common in this region. Many tourists who visit Mikulov are local Czechs. This area is still an underappreciated gem!
I highly recommend Mikolovna E-Bike & Bicycle Rental. This is probably the best Mikulov bike rental location. The friendly man running this shop is super helpful and provides information, advice, and tips for biking in this stunning region. He speaks English which is a huge plus.
The bikes are of higher quality and in excellent condition, which comes in handy for the hilly terrain. If those pesky hills seem like too much, he conveniently rents E-bikes.
Rentals include a helmet, lock, and useful gear in case of flats. There are options to rent other essentials like a phone case that displays your map. By the way, there are tons of downloadable maps on their website. Choose whichever route fits you!

Don’t worry, if the shop is closed, just ring the bell and someone will happily assist you!
Try to set up the bike the day before. We lost valuable wine-sampling hours trying to find a bike in Mikulov the day of. If we set up the day before, we could have seen a lot more at a more enjoyable pace!
Navigation Tip for Biking in Mikulov
Download the mobile app Mapy.CZ. The app is similar to Maps.me, but focuses solely on the Czech Republic. It has every bike route, and hiking trail in the Czech Republic. This app also shows distances and tracks time based on your pace. The bike feature was invaluable.
Mikulov Wine Trail Bike Route
First, exit Mikulov via the main plaza. Make sure to walk your bike through the plaza, as it’s not permitted to ride them there!
Hop on the lovely bike path towards the tiny village of Úvaly.
It’s a beautiful ride on a paved path through the countryside. To your left, enjoy great views of Mikulov and its towering chateau as you cruise out of town. Don’t go into Sedlec village, but hit this stop on the way back.
Get ready for one of the toughest hills, but it will be the most challenging one of the trip. A great place to break is just on the downhill!
Stop for a break at the charming Villa Daniela in Úvaly. The garden terrace is extremely welcoming, almost too much so. I could have stayed here all afternoon working my way through the wine menu; sipping my way through the Mikulov Wine Region one glass at a time.
This beautiful place also offers accommodation options, so if looking to sleep at Villa Daniela book here.
Have a local glass of wine from the extensive wine list, or enjoy their outstanding locally sourced menu. Their large plates to share include charcuterie boards of locally sourced meats and cheeses of the region.
The prices are a little higher, but this was easily one of my favorite stops along the Mikulov Wine Trail.
🚲 Mikulov to Úvaly Mileage: 6.75 miles
Next, onto Valtice
Continue en route along the Mikulov Wine Trail and enjoy the rolling hillside. This section is now on a local road. Keep cruising, down the slight downhill.
It’s possible to see the border entry point to Austria. Stop and cross the border if you wish to “visit” two countries in a day.
On your right side, enjoy the splendid views of the local vineyards with Valtice in the distant backdrop.
Valtice
This town has plenty of places to sample Moravian wine. From wine shops, chateaus, and wine cellars, Valtice offers a wide range of styles and samples of regional Mikulov wine.
🚲 Úvaly to Valtice Mileage: 3.15 miles
Chateau Valtice
Upon arrival at Valtice by bike, roll effortlessly right by Chateau Valtice. There is an excellent wine shop/stand option with plenty of places to park your bike. Not to mention a nice selection of wines from the Chateau (right out back). Look for it as Vinařská pohotovost CHÂTEAU VALTICE.
This little stand actually was the old gatehouse to the winery. Today, it is a wine shop serving up wine by the drought and bottles to go. We were so happy at the stand, that we didn’t even visit the actual Chateau!
For those traveling by bike, they sell wine to-go from draft in plastic bottles!
There is another wine shop across the square, but it seemed a little more “stuffy” and modern.
My dad and I chose the simple wine stand located next to a beautiful park. We sat under a nice umbrella and savored the good views, company, and of course, indulging in a glass of wine.
Vinařská pohotovost Chateau Valtice | Find them Here: Vinařská 407, 691 42 Valtice | Hours: 8:00 – 20:00, food served after 16:00
Have a few Mikulov wine tastings and then choose a glass. The kind man working didn’t speak English but was smiley and helpful
Valtice Confession
In Valtice is the famous and stunning Valtice Palace. They sell amazing wine and have a nice wine cellar to visit. We totally missed the palace and the lovely gardens!
Instead, we sipped on wine from the backside of the Chateau. Whoops! But for us, it was perfect!
Leave Valtice and Continue to Lednice
After savoring the abundance of wine shops and wineries in this area, move towards Lednice. There are plenty of restaurants to eat lunch at in Valtice. However, I think it’s best to pack a picnic, or snack on the large and filling charcuterie boards at the wineries and cellars.
Leave Valtice in the direction of the small village of Hlohovec. Upon arrival into the village, take a right. You will eventually cross over one of the small lakes.
Lednice is a short distance once crossing the lakes.
🚲 Valtice to Lednice Mileage: 6.75 miles
Lednice Palace
Head straight to the Lednice Palace and enjoy walking the manicured grounds. The gardens are nice, but you are not allowed to ride your bike on the grounds. It’s possible to push them during this section. Find parking spots for the bikes near the entrance of the palace.
We skipped the actual tour of the Lednice Palace, but we opted to use the free and clean restrooms inside!
The ground and gardens of Lednice are quite lovely. There are plenty of fountains, flowers, and other interesting tidbits scattered about. Head to the back and check out the scenic lakes.
The Lednice Palace has lots of different tour options. Not only is there the extravagant palace, but there are a variety of museum tickets. There are tickets that include the children’s marionette museum, greenhouse, the minaret, and a grotto.

Head Back to Mikulov via Sedlec
This is a scenic section of the Mikulov Wine Trail that passes the many lakes and monuments. If you have time, you can explore more in-depth the Valtice-Lednice Cultural Landscape which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Valtice-Lednice Cultural Park has numerous monuments and points of interest.
It’s best to head back to the lake you crossed over to arrive in Lednice. However, don’t cross the lake! Stay on the current side to change it up. This path is not paved, but rather, a thin dirt path.
This route offers a new change of scenery and eventually leads directly to the village of Sedlec.
🚲 Lednice to Sedlec Mileage: 6.75 miles
Sedlec
Arrive on the outskirts of the little village of Sedlec. The current trail leads to two main vineyards on the outskirts of town. These vineyards close by 18:00, so make sure to plan accordingly.
Reminder: Leave Mikulov as early as you can! We arrived at Sedlec at 18:02, disappointed not to savor a Mikulov wine tasting at the inviting little wineries.
Arrival into Mikulov
After Sedlec, head back into Mikulov. There’s a nice gas station before town if you want to refuel on water or snacks. Soon after the gas station, it’s possible to cross back to the other side of the trail. This is the enjoyable paved bike path that you rode earlier in the morning.
Return the bikes back to your Mikulov Bike Rental site. For us, it was Mikolovna.
After almost 28 miles, you’ll probably be famished or maybe even thirsty for another glass of wine!
🚲 Sedlec to Mikulov Mileage: 4.5 miles
