Santiago de Compostela is a fabulous historical city found in Galicia, Spain. The city center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and boasts museums, lively tapas bars, and scenic parks. Perhaps the city is most famous for being the end of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route.
I’ve walked numerous Camino de Santiago routes and stayed in many different types of accommodation options in Santiago de Compostela and just outside the city. I’ve also had the privilege of enjoying the city with my family as a tourist and have stayed overnight with my dog.
This Santiago de Compostela accommodation guide is a round-up of my favorite places to stay in Santiago de Compostela.

How Much Time to Spend in Santiago de Compostela?
Santiago de Compostela is a spectacular city in Spain and is definitely worth visiting. In my opinion, it’s a must-see place when visiting Galicia.
I think it’s best to spend at least two days in Santiago de Compostela. The historic Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and there are plenty of museums, attractions, markets, parks, and culinary delights to keep you busy for at least two full days.
Santiago de Compostela also works as a great base to explore highlights of Galicia. There are numerous day trips from Santiago de Compostela. If using Santiago de Compostela as a base, you may want to spend 3 or 4 nights at least in the city.
How Much Time Should Pilgrims Spend in Santiago de Compostela?
My first Camino de Santiago route was the Camino Frances. Upon arrival in Santiago de Compostela, I slept in the city and left early the next day to walk the Camino Finisterre Muxia. Looking back, I regretted not taking more time to explore all that Santiago de Compostela has to offer.
Pilgrims start the Camino de Santiago from numerous locations across Spain, Portugal, and beyond. Pilgrims walk miles for many different reasons to stand in front of the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, the alleged burial place of Saint James.
If you are visiting as a pilgrim who has just completed the Camino de Santiago, here’s how to get your Compostela and other useful information to navigate Santiago. If continuing to walk on the Camino Finisterre, you’ll need to decide if you want to walk to Fisterra or Muxia first.
Where is the Best Area to Stay in Santiago de Compostela?
Those first-time visitors will want to base near the historic Old Town of Santiago de Compostela. There is a lot to see and do in Santiago de Compostela, so you’ll want to be within walking distance of all the sights.
During the high season, from Easter until the end of September, rooms in the historic center will be more expensive and may be booked out far in advance. Those looking to spend a few nights in Santiago de Compostela will want to book their accommodation in advance.
The Old Town can be quite busy and lively at night. Those who sleep light may love a location, but not the noise that comes with being in the heart of the city.
During the low season, it is much easier to find a room in Santiago de Compostela. I walked at the end of January to Santiago de Compostela and had my pick of rooms at a low rate and without a reservation. I walked into Santiago and a few minutes later had a pilgrim room by walk-in at Hospedería San Martin Pinario.
I’ve stayed in the historic old town and on the outskirts of the city. I’ve enjoyed both experiences, depending on what I’m looking for.
For example, during the San Xoan festival, I stayed outside the city and got to go to an extremely local festival. This was a great opportunity to see more of a local neighborhood. However, I prefer being no more than a 15-minute walk from the Historic Old Town of Santiago de Compostela.

I’ve separated them into Albergues near the city center of Santiago de Compostela, and those albergues that are on the outskirts of town.
Popular Santiago de Compostela Albergues near the City Center
1⎟Seminario Menor de la Asunción is a huge pilgrim facility (250+ beds) located in a seminary nestled above Bevis Park. It’s located a short distance from the actual center but still within a few minutes walk to the center. This Albergue has everything you need, including a restaurant, a small shop, private rooms, a common area, a kitchen, a laundry room, and an ATM.
Private rooms are simple yet efficient and cost around 25 Euros. It’s also steps away from a fabulous park and one of the best viewpoints in Santiago de Compostela.
2⎟Albergue Santiago KM0 is located steps away from the Pilgrim Office and Cathedral. This centrally located albergue boasts a terrace, open rooms, a kitchen, and one of the best locations.
3⎟The Last Stamp is a popular albergue located in the history center with multiple rooms over 5 floors with the facilities located in the basement. There is a kitchen and lockers onsite.
4⎟Albergue Azabache has everything you need and is located in the heart of the city. There is also a kitchen available at this albergue.
5⎟Albergue SP 55 by Bossh! Hotels sits conveniently between Bonaval and Belvis Parks. This is a simple private albergue in a quiet part of town with few amenities.

Xunta Albergues & Albergues Outside of the City Center
6⎟Albergue de Monte do Gozo is a huge block-style pilgrim complex built on the hillside of Monte do Gozo. The facilities sleep over 400+ pilgrims and is an albergue on the Camino Frances. The Albergue overlooks Santiago de Compostela and is a little over 3 miles from the cathedral, so most pilgrims spend the night here before walking into Santiago de Compostela.
Monte do Gozo has everything you need, and facilities include a restaurant, a cafe, bike storage, and laundry. During the summer months, there’s access to the swimming pool for an additional fee.
Monte do Gozo also offers private rooms and a hostel.

7⎟Albergue de Peregrinos San Lázaro is the final and closest Xunta Albergue to Santiago de Compostela.
San Lazaro Albergue is under 2 miles from the Cathedral but is right next to a convenient bus stop. This is a typical Xunta albergue with all the amenities. You will also need a pilgrim credential to sleep here. This Xunta Albergue does allow reservations if you contact them directly.

8⎟Albergue Fin del Camino is a Public Albergue that has been dedicated to honoring Jaime García Rodríguez. He was the director of the Pilgrim Office in Santiago for over 15 years. You must have a Pilgrim Credencial to sleep here.
Albergue Fin del Camino is around 1.5 miles from the Cathedral but close to a bus stop that can shuttle pilgrims into the center. There is also a shopping center nearby which is steps away from the Camino Frances.

9⎟T Hostel is located out of the historic city but is around a 20-minute walk to town. This is a super spacious hostel with a well-stocked kitchen in the basement and laundry facilities. There are lots of small grocery shops near the hostel. I slept here when nothing was available in town and had a lovely stay (and it’s really quiet).
This is a great option if you would prefer to stay in a neighborhood rather than the busy old town.

Popular Hotels & Mid-Range Budget Places to Stay in Santiago de Compostela
Here are some of the top-rated places to stay in Santiago de Compostela, which are a mix of pensions, guest houses, and hotels. Remember that these places can have much higher rates during the peak season and during festivals.
10⎟Hospedería San Martin Pinario is found in an old monastery built in the 16th century that’s now a hotel with private rooms, restaurants, cafe, and is right across the way from the cathedral. A substantial breakfast is available every morning. One of the best things about staying at Hospedería San Martin Pinario is their hearty breakfast buffet included with the room fee.

11⎟Pensión O Códice is a popular pension with bright and open rooms, many with views of the Cathedral. Sleep like a baby with the soundproof windows
12⎟Libredón Rooms is a lovely guesthouse that sits on Fonseca Square and is within walking distance to some of the best tapas streets in Santiago. Each room has a private bath and simple decor. The rooms are small, but provide easy access to explore the main attractions in Santiago de Compostela.
13⎟Casa da Balconada is a comfortable guesthouse with an inviting and caring host that’s close to all the action.
14⎟Hotel Rua Villar is a restored 18th-century house that is now a popular hotel in the center of town
15⎟Alda Catedral is found on Rua do Franco and offers simple modern rooms in the historic Old Town. Alda hotels are typically budget-friendly, and this one is no exception.
16⎟Hotel Entrecercas is located in the heart of Santiago de Compostela and offers clean rooms and friendly staff. The Hotel has maintained much of its charm and highlights the character of the stone structure.
There is an option for a complete breakfast; some are included in the room and others are not, so be sure to double-check when booking.
17⎟Hotel Plaza Obradoiro is located in the main plaza. This modern hotel has one of the best locations in the city for a fair price.
18⎟Casa Celsa-Barbantes is a 2-star hotel that’s close to the cathedral with high guest ratings
19⎟San Clemente by Pousadas de Compostela is found at the foothills of Alameda Park and has simple rooms with private bathrooms.

21⎟The Parador Hotel in Santiago de Compostela
Paradors are found throughout Spain. These luxury hotels are always housed in significant historical buildings. The Parador de Santiago is no different. Built-in the 15th century, this was one of the original pilgrim hostels gifted by Isabel and Fernando during Spain’s Golden Age.
Hostal Reis Catolicos is no longer a pilgrim hostel although the signboard still says that. The luxury 5-star hotel is steps away from the Cathedral de Santiago de Compostela in the Praza do Obradoiro and boasts old-world charm and a highly-rated restaurant.

The Free Pilgrim Meal from Hostal Reis Catolicos
As a gift to pilgrims, the Hostal Reis Catolicos still offers the first ten pilgrims who arrive in Santiago de Compostela a free meal. The free pilgrim meal voucher is issued by the Pilgrim Office and is given to the first ten pilgrims each day who qualify for the official Compostela.
The meal is served in the Enxebre Restaurant and is part of a 500-year hospitality tradition! I received a free pilgrim meal after walking the Camino de Invierno in the winter.

Another Luxury Stay in Santiago de Compostela
22⎟San Francisco Hotel Monumento is a luxury hotel located in an 18th-century convent. The hotel is close to Cathedral and boasts an indoor swimming pool and jacuzzi. There’s a daily breakfast buffet and a beautiful courtyard to relax.
Where to Stay in Santiago de Compostela that’s Dog-Friendly
Many people are starting to walk or travel to Santiago de Compostela with their four-legged friends. While Donaji and I haven’t walked a Camino together, and I am unsure if we will, I have visited Santiago de Compostela with her.
These were some of the best places to stay in Santiago de Compostela that are pet friendly.
Remember, it’s always best to contact the property to see if they have a pet fee. In Galicia, I’ve found that few hotels and guesthouses charge a pet supplement fee.
23⎟Pensión A Casa do Peregrino is a great dog-friendly option in the heart of the historic old town. The private rooms come with an ensuite bathroom.
24⎟PR Badalada is located close to the Mercado de Abastos de Santiago and offers pet-friendly rooms.
25⎟Apartamentos Alda Fogar Natural offers simple apartments near Bonaval Park. They provide a small doggie bed and food dish. There is a small pet fee. We paid 15 Euros for Donaji to sleep here. While we enjoyed the apartment, the walls were a little thin, and my pup is a little noise-sensitive. Good value for the price.
