1 | Vinohrady, Green & Trendy Prague Neighborhood

The Vineyards found in Vinohrady Prague with stellar city views in the backdrop

The Vinohrady neighborhood is not so much a hidden neighborhood in Prague but deserves recognition nonetheless for strictly being awesome. Vinohrady Prague is frequented by many travelers, but dig deep into this neighborhood to experience it more authentically.

What to See & Do in Vinohrady Prague

From special roots as once Royal Vineyards, this trendy neighborhood offers up some contemporary coffee shops, remarkable green spaces, and even a vineyard in the city with a tasting cellar.

Visit Grébovka (Havličkovy Sady)

Grébovka, or Havličkovy Sady, is an impressive park located in the Vinohrady neighborhood. This green urban space has a grotto, plenty of paved pathways, a vineyard, and a pavilion that boasts a cafe and oftentimes concerts in the summer. Throughout the park are quality viewpoints of Prague.

This park makes a great living room for the Vinohrady neighborhood of Vinohrady, and Prague for that matter.

One of the highlights of this park is the magnificent grotto. It’s possible to climb about the grotto and explore the hidden pathways of a cave that looks down to a spectacular fountain. Benches surround the grotto, so it’s a superb place to relax. Follow the pathways to discover other fountains in the sprawling park.

Do a Wine Tasting in Vinohrady Prague

Grébovka wine cellar, Havličkovy Sady, wine glass, stairs, cellar, vineyards
In Havličkovy Sady, find the excellent Grebovka wine cellar open only on Fridays.

Grébovka wine cellar is located right in the heart of one of Prague’s favorite neighborhoods. It’s only possible to visit the wine cellar on Friday. The cavernous cellar pours wine from the tap and they also sell bottles of wine in bottles. Stroll the paths throughout the vineyard, sip on wine, and watch the sun fade behind the city of Prague.

Groebovka – Horní Landhauska is a wine cellar located on the edge of Havličkovy Sady. Tasting can be arranged in advance. During the summer months enjoy a glass of wine from both Bohemia and Moravian Wine Regions.

Vinotéka Noelka is one of those hidden little wine shop gems. What I absolutely love about this place is its commitment to supporting small-batch wineries all while offering a completely authentic tasting experience like no place else in Prague.

Do as the locals do, and spill out on the street sipping on an authentic Moravian wine. This is one of the best places in Prague to drink wine.

Microbreweries in Vinohrady Neighborhood

Vinohradský Pivovar in Vinohrady neighborhood in Prague
Vinohradský Pivovar is a great place to watch the tram scoot by in the Vinohrady District

Vinohrady has plenty of places to grab a beer, but check out these two unique spots brewing their own beer.

Vinohradský Pivovar is a restored brewery that dates back to the late 1800’s. Not only do they brew their own beer, but Vinohradský Pivovar serves up traditional food both upstairs and down. This is one of the most popular restaurants in Vinohrady, but there’s standing room outside to enjoy a beer and watch the tram roll on by.

This brewery is also utilized as a neighborhood community space, so there’s always something happening from a launch party, concert, or film screening.

Ossegg Praha is a concept brewery that is based on the traditional beer-making techniques derived from the monks of the Cistercian Abbey Brewery in Osek, Czech Republic. The beer maintains the traditional methods; however, OSSEGG boasts a very modern facility.

Enjoy these unfiltered and unpasteurized brews on a pleasant patio, or head downstairs to see the brewing process with strategically placed photos of old monks with watchful eyes. Traditional Czech dishes are served up to pair with the current beer selections.

Stroll Through the Farmer’s Markets & Seasonal Markets

In this top Prague neighborhood, don’t miss one of the many fabulous farmer’s markets.

Trhy na Jiřaku is a popular market that takes place in the main square of Jiřího z Poděbrad. This farmer’s market boasts everything from local fresh fruits, tons of artisanal products, and food being prepared fresh from the market.

This market runs from mid-February to mid-December and is paving the way for the Green Movement. It runs daily from Wednesday to Friday.

There is another Farmer’s Market on the outskirts of the district, Trhy na Tyláku. This market runs throughout the week and is a great market to visit during the early part of the week.

Náměstí Míru, or Peace Square boasts one of Prague’s top Christmas Markets.

Spend Time in Riegrovy Sady

Watch the sunset with locals at Riegrovy Sady in one of the best Prague neighborhoods

Riegrovy Sady is an incredible park located in one of the best neighborhoods in Prague. This park offers beer gardens and epic viewpoints of Prague Castle. On the green hillside is one of the best places in Prague to catch a sunset.

Riegrovy Sady is also one of the best spots in Prague to people-watch and enjoy a local feel. Find people laying out on blankets, sharing a picnic, and sipping on their favorite beverage.

2 | Dejvice, Local Vibe Prague Neighborhood

Dejvice is another great Prague neighborhood that merges into the Bubeneč district. However, Dejvice has its very own distinct vibe. This Prague neighborhood boasts a busy square dotted with local eateries, food carts, and people dancing barefoot in the open grassy spaces.

What to See & Do in Dejvice Prague

Here are some of the best things to do in the Dejvice neighborhood in Prague.

Wander the Saturday Morning Farmers Market

food truck, coffee truck, people, farmer's market, Farmářské trhy, neighborhoods in Prague
The farmer’s market has tons of options to try local food in the form of food trucks.

Near the main subway station in Dejvice is the bustling farmer’s market, Farmářské trhy na Kulaťáku. This bustling market has a great selection of produce, food carts, and stands featuring specialty lemonades. Look for artisanal food products, with lots of vegan options.

The locals purchase items from the market and picnic in the green space. Find a great little covered section to enjoy your market purchases while being entertained by local musicians.

This was my favorite Famer’s Market in Prague.

Drink the Original Pivnice Budvarka Dejvic

budweiser budvar, czech beer, glass, beer mug, beer, table
Budweiser Budvar is another great Czech Beer

One of Czech’s most famous beers, Budweiser Budvar, is the main draw to this little brew-pub. It’s not the typical U.S. Budweiser with the Clydesdale horse and cute puppy commercials, but rather a Czech beer, brewed from the same city to the south, České Budějovice. These two Budweiser companies are still engaged in a trademark lawsuit that dates back to as long as the late 1930s.

Pilsner Urquell has bragging rights to being Czech’s most famous brew. This means that a majority of the restaurants in Prague pour only Pilsner Urquell. If interested in delving deeper into the Czech beer scene, visit this pub to try something a little different.

The staff at Budweiser Budvar are extremely friendly and pour the perfect mug of Budvar.

In the summer, enjoy the excellent selection of outdoor seating. It sits on a busy street making it an optimal location for people watching. This is another great pub serving up a reasonably priced lunch menu.

Visit Lidice Memorial

A memorial for the children that were killed in Lidice Memorial during World War II
The Children’s War Victims Monument at Lidice Memorial

The metro stop of Dejvicka is only two stops away from Nádraži Veleslavín, on the green line. Nádraži Veleslavín is where to catch the bus to visit the extremely well-done, Lidice Memorial, making it a quick day trip from Prague.

The Lidice Memorial is a must-see Memorial while visiting Prague. This moving memorial has a museum, and an art gallery, and shows the atrocities that happened to this small village during World War II.

There was something haunting about this site that stuck with me after I visited.

3 | Bubeneč The Prague Neighborhood for Foodies

man, smiling, food, traditional Czech Food, restaurace U Veverky, Bubeneč neighborhood, Prague
My dad enjoying a traditional meal at Restaurace U Veverky

Bubeneč is the perfect neighborhood to indulge in traditional Czech dishes. Looking for great places to try the local cuisine but at more affordable prices than Old Town and New Town?

Bubeneč is one of the best Prague neighborhoods for foodies.

From traditional restaurants, a residential vibe, a neighborhood brewpub, and more appealing price tags than Old Town, Bubeneč remains a less frequented and hidden neighborhood in Prague.

Top Three Bubeneč Neighborhood Restaurants

These neighborhood establishments are always filled to the brim with locals and travelers alike, devouring large plates of Czech favorites. Try these three popular neighborhood eats.

Restaurace U Veverky

My favorite restaurant to grab a bite in Bubeneč is Restaurace U Veverky. Locals fill up the pub, all while sipping on Pilsner Urquell fresh from the tank, and savoring a hearty plate of goulash.

The menu here is meat-heavy, like most Czech eateries, but look for a few dishes showcasing the famous cheese of Olomouc. U Veverky has a clean and crisp interior with an old-world flare. The food is scrumptious, the staff is kind, and the prices are right.

What to Eat at U Veverky | Krakonošův bramborák, homemade potato pancakes stuffed with spicy pork and veggies. This is the best meal I have eaten in two months house sitting in Prague.

Pilsner Restaurant U Viléma

Eat traditional food in a fantastic garden setting at Pilsner restaurant U Viléma. This little gem sits on a corner on the outskirts of the Bubeneč neighborhood. Once entering through the gate, the noise of the city disappears.

The traditional Czech food is hearty. Again, this is another Prague restaurant pouring Pilsner Urquell straight from the tank. At dinner time, cue romantic candles to add to the splendid outdoor garden ambiance.

What to Eat at U Vilema | Pikantní hovězí guláš, the house goulash with red onions and pickled chilies

Hospůdka U Pětníka

one of the best burgers in Prague can be found at Hospůdka U Pětníka in the Bubenec Neighborhood in Prague
The burgers from Hospůdka U Pětníka are definitely memorable

Hospůdka U Pětníka’s menu focuses on traditional Czech food, but I have to admit, I came here strictly for burgers. These massive burgers had to be one of the best burgers I had eaten in all of Prague.

Find unique burgers from shredded duck burgers, burgers stuffed with bacon, and delicious veggie burgers, the options are endless on their “Burger Mania Menu.” A generous heaping pile of fries topples off the plate.

This trendy joint serves up Prague’s favorite local brew Únětická from the tank.

What to Eat at Hospůdka U Pětníka | Like it hot? Try the Chili Burger, stuffed with chili peppers and cheddar cheese

Neighborhood Brews in Bubeneč

A beer that boasts the neighborhood’s location, Pivovar Bubeneč, provides a relief from the “same old” Czech beers on tap. Set in a very minimalist atmosphere, but with a great rotating tap list, this little brewery is just right.

In the summer, enjoy a beer on one of the few outdoor tables. They do serve food, but I stopped in just to quench my thirst. Servers were friendly and willing to help me pick a beer, in English.

Bubeneč Summer Market

In the summertime, find a small local market set up at the Metro Station Hradčanská. Locals are selling fruits, veggies, and fresh baked goodies.

This is a simple, but handy market, for those looking to grab a quick snack or cook their own meals.

4 | Karlín, Up & Coming Gem Neighborhood in Prague

Karlín neighborhood offers one of the most laid-back Prague neighborhoods. This neighborhood feels lived in and not invaded by mobs of tourists.

What to See in Karlin Neighborhood

The green space surrounding the main church in Karlin neighborhood in Prague
Karlin Church is a beautiful Church in this up-and-coming Prague neighborhood

Karlín has an incredible square that is filled with the vibrant youth that complements this neighborhood. Once an industrial neighborhood, now look for some trendy eateries, but the real magic here is just slowing down and enjoying this untouched neighborhood in Prague.

This Prague neighborhood sits along the Vltava River.

Karlín Square

Karlin Square just might be my favorite green space in all of Prague. The commanding Church of Karlin towers over a spirited park, filled with young people enjoying the summertime on large blankets.

Watch young people chasing after frisbees, playing the guitar, and enjoying a picnic. The square is lined with local favorite bakeries, microbreweries, and little coffee shops.

Antonínovo Pekařství

Follow your nose to one of Prague’s most popular, and excellent bakeries. There are a handful of Prague’s local bakery chain Antonínovo pekařství scattered throughout the city, but I favored this one that sits on Karlín Square.

This little shop pumps out some delicious home-baked treats. Sweet or savory? There’s a little bit of everything. Enjoy a delightful goodie with a coffee or tea. The Karlin location also has a walk-up window for ice cream. Grab a cone to go and enjoy the nearby Karlín Square to soak up its splendid atmosphere.

Karlín’s neighborhood Antonínovo pekařství has one of the best locations in Prague.

Presto Meat Market Bistro

Presto Meat Market Bistro, food, plate, soup, bowl, coleslaw, mashed potatoes, neighborhoods in prague
Presto Meat Market Bistro is an excellent place to try out a lunch menu in Prague.

Hands down, Presto Meat Market Bistro, has one of the best lunchtime menus in Prague. First off, this place is a specialty butcher, slicing up high-quality meats. Their focus is on regional livestock and showcasing organic products. The Karlin neighborhood Meat Market makes homemade sausages and even highlights gamey meats like deer, pheasants, and wild boar.

During the weekdays, don’t miss their incredible Bistro, with a small, limited, and rotating menu. This establishment is only open during the lunch hours. The bistro usually showcases three proteins and dishes up sides that complement them.

Presto Meat Market Bistro is packed, so plan on arriving early. There are little tables set up outside, so snag one if you’re lucky. The menu is Czech by heart but has a super modern twist. The staff are willing to help choose the perfect plate of food, however, finding a table may be the hardest part!

What to Eat at Presto Meat Market Bistro | If you’re lucky, try the salmon, encrusted with sesame seeds served with a heaping side of wasabi mashed potatoes and a zesty slaw

Lokál Hamburk

Lokáls are another popular small local chain pouring up mugs of Pilsner Urquell and the beloved Black Kozel, a black unfiltered beer. These establishments vary depending on each location, but all focus on locally sustained ingredients that change with the season.

With its prime-time location in Karlín Square, Lokál Hamburk, has locals pouring out into the street, conversing with friends and sipping on a mug of beer.

5 | Vyšehrad, Magical Hilltop Castle & Fortress

Vyšehrad fortress is a spectacular hilltop fortress with a church, vineyards, walking paths, castle, and old gates
The sun begins to set from the quiet Medieval Vyšehrad Fortress

The Vyšehrad neighborhood in Prague boasts a charming fortress and has a lot less crowds than some of Prague’s more famous landmarks, like Prague Castle. The Prague Castle can be seen towering off into the distance skyline of Prague, but Vyšehrad has a more intimate charm.

Things to See & Do in Vyšehrad

The gem of the neighborhood is mainly the Vyšehrad Fortress, which towers on top of a commanding hill, dressed in green spaces and vineyards.

Vyšehrad Castle & Grouds

One of the best ways to approach the Vyšehrad Castle is through one of the grand gates. The fortress gates are plentiful, each one opening up to another quiet sanctuary within. The Tabor Gate leads to the Leopold Gate and on the opposite side of the National Historic Monument find the Brick Gate.

Follow the twisting and turning paths along the old fortress wall to be rewarded with incredible views of the city. Most vistas look out at the surrounding neighborhoods of Prague, while others provide views of the Vltava River.

viewpoint from Vyšehrad Fortress which sits on top of a hill
Another stunning viewpoint from Vyšehrad

Get lost in the grounds to discover there is a vineyard in the park, with its vines stretching its branches down the hill.

There are a wide range of churches, from the adorable little Rotunda Martina, and the towering Saint Peter and Paul Basilica. The fortress is now an amazing space that has mostly been converted into a park.

The park is free to explore, but some sights and exhibitions require entrance fees.

➜ There are some guided tour options like this Private Vyšehrad Castle Tour with Casemates and Gorlice

This fortress offers incredible views with lots of history, yet remains overlooked by most tourists. While they flock to the famous Prague Castle, this fortress stays relatively quiet.

Come at sunset, when local families picnic in the green space and young couples come to exchange kisses on the fortress walls.

Vyšehrad Cemetery

One of the most overlooked sections of the Vyšehrad fortress has to be the cemetery located next to the Church of Saint Peter and Paul Basilica. The tombs have sculptures and a majority of the graveyard is decorated in detailed mosaics. There are many famous Czech composers and artists buried here.

Enjoy Na Hradbách

There are a few places to have a beverage in Vyšehrad, but Na Hradbách is the best. Built into the fortress walls find simple picnic tables and windows to purchase Czech beer.

There’s a park nearby, so children run happily about while their parents watch lovingly with a mug of beer in hand. Lots of times, there is a local band playing, and people are happily singing and dancing along.

This beer garden is a popular place for locals to come watch the sunset to escape the massive tourist crowds. During the summer months, the tables can fill up, but this place is worth a stop for the views alone.

Cafes & Places to Eat Near Vyšehrad

This is a fortified medieval castle, so remember it’s an uphill walk to reach it. There are limited options inside the fortress walls, but along the way are some notable places to eat and drink.

Vratislavova Street leads up to the Brick Gate entrance of Vyšehrad. “Under the Vyšehrad Fortress” find numerous places to grab a meal or beverage.

Kavárna Čekárna has a beautiful garden and serves up great coffee. U Kroka is an established restaurant that has been serving Czech cuisine since 1895. For something different, Bistro Habibi boasts authentic and delicious Middle Eastern cuisine. Wine Bar Andílek is a cozy establishment serving Czech wine.

6 | Holešovice, Prague Hipster Neighborhood

Church of St. Anthony of Padua in the Holesovice neighborhood in Prague
Holešovice is known as Prague’s hipster neighborhood

Holešovice is one of the best hipster neighborhoods in Prague. At one time, this was the old meatpacking district. Now, it’s filled with a slew of coffee shops, modern restaurants, bookshops, arts, and pubs.

What to See in the Prague Hipster Neighborhood

Holešovice is constantly changing, but here are three great ways to explore the hippest neighborhood in Prague.

Visit Hala 22 (Food Market)

Hala 22 – Food Market is a daily market boasting not only local but the freshest produce in Prague. The market is said to be the largest vegetable market in Prague. Besides fruits and veggies, find artisanal products, flowers, fresh cheese, seasonal products, and of course, some great stalls to eat market to table.

DOX Centre for Contemporary Art is now a contemporary-styled building created from an old industrial building that showcases modern Czech artists.

National Gallery Prague – Trade Fair Palace houses permanent exhibits from Van Gogh to Picasso and has temporary exhibits that are spread across three floors.

Vnitroblock

Vnitroblock is an epic workspace for all those digital nomads, or those simply looking to experience a unique space to participate in the coffee culture.

There are tons of specialty events a few times a week. Events include things like yoga live music, pub quiz, and other community activities.

Lahoodky

Chlebíčky, deli case, salads, open face sandwhiches, Lahoodky, neighborhoods in prague
Chlebíčky is front and center at Lahoodky’s gorgeous deli counter.

Prague’s favorite open-faced sandwiches, or Chlebíčky, are a highlight of the Czech foodie scene. Chlebíčky sammies can range from vegetarian options to smoked salmon, or even thinly sliced deli meat, but they are usually devoured and eaten in only a couple of bites.

These little bites are built on a sliced piece of baguette, slathered with some kind of spread, and garnished with toppings. They usually look too beautiful to eat. Ha, just kidding!

Lahoodky is a delicious deli serving up a wide range of Chlebíčky and other delicatessen items. There are only a few small tables and chairs, but they offer speedy take-out as well. The prices here are reasonable and fair, and the presentation of the food is sensational.

A true gem that’s worth the trek to visit Prague’s Holešovice neighborhood.

Wander Letná Park

Holešovice Neighborhood is sandwiched between the Bubeneč neighborhood, Letná Park, and along the Vtlana River. So, take a stroll through the sweeping park that offers some of the best views of Prague.

Krymská Street has it all. This hip street boasts tons of unique eateries, with quite a large selection of vegan spots. Find brew pubs, interesting and unique shops, indie bookstores, a top-rated barber shop, and an independent movie theater.

Krymská feels a little more rugged and cutting-edge than the nearby Vinohrady neighborhood. This is another one of Prague’s more up-and-coming neighborhoods.
