Fajã dos Cubres to Caldeira Santo Cristo | Spectacular Trail on São Jorge Island
The stunning island of São Jorge Azores is known for its unique landforms of fajãs, which are flat plains created by erosion of volcanic slopes that extend into the sea. Two of the most unique fajãs can be found on São Jorge’s north shore, Fajã dos Cubres and Fajã de Caldeira de Santo Cristo.
Both fajãs have coastal lagoons, with the Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo lagoon being the only place where clams are cultivated on the Azores islands.
The two fajãs are connected via a dirt gravel path that follows the sea and lines the fertile green mountainous hillsides.
There is an officially marked São Jorge hiking trail (PR 01 SJO) that starts in the mountains and twists through the steep slopes of the fajãs, but if the weather isn’t cooperating in the high mountains, it’s still worthwhile to walk between the two tiny hamlets on the fajãs.

Fajã dos Cubres to Caldeira de Santo Cristo Walking Path

- Official Trail Markers: There is only one road and there are yellow and red wooden signboards and blazes because this path is part of a small section of the PR 01 SJO

Alternatively, with good weather and a sense of adventure, the Serra do Topo Caldeira do Santo Cristo to Fajã dos Cubres is another way to see both of these São Jorge fajãs.
The official trail that includes these two fajãs starts up at the Serra Topo Parking & Information Board. From the Eolic Park of Serra do Topo, follow the north trail in the direction of Caldeira do Santo Cristo. The official trail is marked as the PR O1 SJO.
The start of the trailhead is Serra do Topo which has an altitude of just under 2,300 feet (700 meters). The path twists hikers down the steep fajãs to descend to almost sea level. Weather is a big factor on this hike and oftentimes the mountains can be covered in thick fog and rain clouds.
The Serra do Topo – Caldeira do Santo Cristo – Fajã dos Cubres hiking trail is a point-to-point trail. If following the trail, you’ll arrive at Caldeira do Santo Cristo first and end the hike in Fajã dos Cubres. There are no cars allowed in Fajã da Caldeira do Santo Cristo, but during certain hours ATVs can utilize the trail.
Even with a rental car, a taxi is necessary to return hikers to the trailhead for their car. No taxis are waiting in Fajã dos Cubres, so arranging a pick-up is essential.
Taxis on the Azores are regulated and each fare to each destination is clearly posted. Taxi fares prices and destinations can be found at the ferry ports, airport, and the Tourist Information Center.

If you don’t want to deal with a taxi fare or the weather isn’t great in the high mountains, the walk between Fajã dos Cubres to Caldeira do Santo Cristo and back is a great alternative option that is more than worth it!

Packing List for the Short Day Hike Between the Fajãs
For any day hike on the Azores, it’s ideal to have a well-stocked day pack. The weather changes fast so being prepared is essential. Must-carry gear should include extra dry gear, a packable rain jacket, and enough water.
The hike between Fajã dos Cubres to Fajã da Caldeira do Santo Cristo is mostly flat. During the high season, there are cafes and restaurants in both hamlets. If looking to enjoy a drink or meal, it’s a good idea to have Euros readily available.
I never leave without a First-Aid Kit that has at least one emergency blanket in it and a fully charged power bank to use with my electronics.
Carry a lightweight refillable water bottle, as the Azores is a top eco-friendly destination. Trekking Poles are useful, especially on muddy trails.
While the trail between Fajã dos Cubres and Caldeira do Santo Cristo is mostly flat you’ll need a good pair of hiking shoes. I wore Altra trail runners and loved them, especially since they dry quickly.
How to Get to Fajã dos Cubres
Fajã dos Cubres is located on the north and rugged coast of São Jorge island and is easily accessible by car.
With a car, make sure to stop at the Miradouro da Fajã dos Cubres and soak in those first stunning views. The coastal lagoon is quite distinct and memorable.
There are two little cafes in Fajã dos Cubres and a church. We had a great sandwich and coffee from the pop-up stand of Taberna do Paço. Here, find friendly service, bathrooms, and a nice outdoor terrace. The staff may be able to help arrange taxi services if need be.
Fajã dos Cubres is picturesque and can be explored with ease pretty quickly. The coastal lagoon has an old mill and a few footpaths.
With a car, continue to the end of the road. Cars can park here on the road near the stone building that houses a public bathroom. Most cars park facing the sea.
What to Expect on the Foot Path Between Fajã dos Cubres and Caldeira do Santo Cristo
The scenic trail that connects this hamlet to Santo Cristo does not allow cars to use the road. The only way to reach Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo is by foot or ATV. The ATVs are limited to certain hours each day.
Fajã dos Cubres Trailhead to Caldeira do Santo Cristo
There is only one dirt path that leads to Caldeira do Santo Cristo. The red gravel soil is beautiful and accented by the bright green landscape of the mountains and the blue sea.
The Atlantic Ocean will be on the left, with black volcanic rocks jetting out along the shore. To the right, enjoy the tree-lined path. The path is straightforward and it’s hard to purposely meander off the trail.
The next point of interest is the unmissable luxurious stone buildings of the Kuanza Nature Experience. These beautiful apartments are found on Fajã do Belo and are a treat for visitors wishing to appreciate the solitude of the north coast.

Another highlight after Kuanza is a beautiful waterfall. Cross over the stone bridge and continue to Fajã da Caldeira do Santo Cristo. There is a signboard here that welcomes guests and also includes that this area is part of the protected landscape area of the island.
Charming Caldeira do Santo Cristo
The Caldeira de Santo Cristo coastal lagoon is one of the first things you’ll see upon arrival. Follow the path into the small village where it’s possible to visit the shores of the lake.
The colorful shacks contrast with the green mountains.
The hamlet of Caldeira do Santo Cristo is small. There are only a few residents that live here permanently. Some of the highlights of the small community include the Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo Interpretation Centre and the small hermitage chapel of Senor Santo Cristo. The small chapel started construction in 1832 and was an important pilgrimage site for the island.
Along the shoreline are many viewpoints that showcase the raw beauty here.
Many lodges on the north shore of São Jorge Island cater to surfers. The rough north shores of São Jorge make for perfect and ideal conditions for those willing to ride the waves.
In Santo Cristo, there are two restaurant-style places. A fabulous place to grab a drink or meal is Taberna O Convés, with a lovely outdoor patio and romantic and cozy interior. In the “center” of the hamlet find O Borges a bar and restaurant that serves fresh seafood. They also have a covered outdoor terrace.
In Caldeira de Santo Cristo, there are two main accommodation options. The Caldeira Guesthouse is a top-rated place to stay. Casa da Caldeira offers private apartments, some of which boast views of the lake.

After spending time in Caldeira de Santo Cristo simply head back on the same trail to return to Fajã dos Cubres.

Tips for Walking Fajã dos Cubres to Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo
The dirt trail that connects Fajã dos Cubres and Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo is extremely straightforward, but here are some general tips for hiking in the Azores.
Remember, the official hiking trail PR 01 SJO that starts from the high mountains is more technical, and steeper, and should only be attempted in fair weather conditions.
Be Mindful of the Weather
The Azores are found in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean and the weather can change drastically in just a short time. São Jorge island is the “Brown Island” due to its rugged cliffs in many shades of brown. The island is nicknamed the “Dragon Island” as it resembles a sleeping dragon.
This trail that connects the two fajãs is mostly flat and follows along the north coastline. Heavy rains can cause the trail to be extremely muddy. Never hike in extreme weather or seriously heavy rains. The winds can be strong and dangerous on São Jorge island. Always stay up to date on the current weather conditions
Many of the fajãs were formed from erosion and landslides. Some of the trails can close due to unstable land conditions. Always check the current trail conditions on the official Azores hiking website.
It’s nice to check the SpotAzores webcams found throughout all nine Azores islands. However, Do not rely on the cameras since the weather can change at a moment’s notice.
Have Proper Gear
Although the trail between the two north fajãs is short and technically easy, always bring enough water. The bars and cafes in Fajã dos Cubres and Fajã da Caldeira de Santo Cristo can be closed, especially in the off-season.

São Jorge island is a rugged and unique Azores island. The island is known for its cheese, so it’s a fun experience to tour a São Jorge Cheese Factory.
There are endless fajãs to explore. São Jorge boasts over 70 fajãs. Café Nunes on Fajã dos Vimes boats the only coffee plantation in Europe.
Simão Dias is often called the most beautiful natural swimming pool in the Azores and is accessible from Fajã do Ouvidor.
There are tons of awesome places to discover on São Jorge island. It’s best to rent a car and budget for at least 3 days to see all the highlights of this underrated Azores island.

The Azores Islands are an archipelago of nine islands found in the Atlantic Ocean almost 1,000 miles to the west of Portugal. The archipelago is an autonomous region of Portugal, with each island having its personality and highlights. Each island is completely different than the next.
The Azores Islands are a spectacular hiking destination.
São Jorge island is part of the “triangle” islands. Nearby Faial has a bustling port, Capelinhos volcano area, and green-covered Caldeira that can be hiked down into only with a guide. One challenging hike on Faial is the Ten Volcanoes hike. Across the way is Pico, the island with the tallest mountain in Portugal, which is a dormant stratovolcano. Pico is also known for its wine so don’t miss the Vinhas da Criação Velha hike through the vineyards.
The most visited Island is São Miguel Island with its numerous hiking trails. Some of the best hikes in São Miguel include Salto do Prego, the beautiful Janela do Inferno, and the Salto do Cabrito trail. São Miguel is home to numerous hot springs, tea plantations, and colorful crater lakes. The Gorreana Tea Plantation is a great way to spend a half day walking the tea plantations and the lesser-known Caminho da Água da Gorreana trail.
